Week In Review (2/26/2016)

blog-0117958001456519961.jpg

Hey Descenters,

How's your week gone? I hope it's been a good one.

We've had a very productive week -- complete with a new build. More info on that here.

In addition to getting out a new build, playing around with portals (sorry Rob Posted Image ) and other exciting gameplay stuff, we spent some time getting ready for our move. As Eric noted in the forums, we're relocating -- final destination not yet known but it will likely be in Northwest Austin.

In last week's WIR, I promised to put out a feature set list/road map that would be presentable to you guys/gals. It is under internal review and will likely go up early next week -- although that depends on the web guys. I would've had it done earlier but I was laid up for a couple of days this week and didn't get a finish it.

As always, Wingman's Hangar is right here:

The Studio Snapshot is here too!!

Have a great weekend and I'll see you next week!

Cheers,

BlueDog.

Week In Review (2/19/2016)

blog-0534574001455912042.jpg

Hey Descenters,

This week we've been continuing work on some player submitted maps; Skylab, Colosseum, and Dead-Moroz. At this point, the process is that players build a map using our map kit (set of graybox walls, tunnels, doors, etc) We take it from there and add some gameplay elements and final art. One of these days, the map kit will give the players the ability to do all that too, just not yet.

So look for Colosseum next week. Not only is it a very cool map, but we've added destructible environment elements to it as well. Take a look at the latest Studio Snapshot to see it -- or you could just wait until next week to play it!

The single player story arc is in development. Look for more of that in the next month or so.

We've spent quite a bit of time refactoring our development plan as well.

There have been quite a few requests for a project roadmap/feature list. I'll put one up next week.

In addition to the maps, there's more gameplay added to the latest build so look for Keith's build notes for more info. One thing though, we've adjusted the way the matchmaking system tries to balance out the matches. Essentially, we've gone from attempting to add players to as many matches as possible to a system that attempts to fill matches before allocating players to other matches. This primarily effects quickmatch players.

Check out this week's Wingman's Hangar:

The ever popular Studio Snapshot:

That's it for me... see you next Friday.

Cheers,

Descent:Underground - MARCHES to a fall release!

blog-0900238001455833351.jpg

Yep, that is right, we have had to adjust our release date to the fall. Once we decided to go to Early Access and allow user generated content in earlier it became clear that it would have an impact on our overall schedule but that the game itself would benefit greatly from it.

We have everything on our sprint roadmap and are making great progress for a small team. We have lots of releases per month, have some really cool content coming for folks to play. We have all 9 ships in the game, tech trees and roles are being worked on, single player bot AI is getting a big boost. The prologue single player campaign is underway and the special weapons and ship abilities are entering test and then Proving Grounds soon.

There is no denying we are pushing beyond our original date - when we set out on the Kickstarter we had no plans for Early Access or incorporating user-made maps this soon. But, it made sense for us to do those things and to divert some of our resources towards those endeavors - which causes our dates to slip a bit.

That is one of the benefits of not being with a large publisher - who can at times force you to cut important features. We have decided the game is the most important thing, and we want users playing it and giving feedback NOW so that we can make sure the balance and fun factor are being addressed all along and not just at the end.

So, yes, we are going to miss March - we have said so on WMH, and in several threads but never in an official blog post, and that is something we felt we should do.

Fortunately a new build is coming out next week, with a lot of new stuff - so the game will continue to grow while we make the necessary adjustments.

Thanks, and see you all underground.

Week In Review (2/12/2016)

blog-0688892001455309465.png

Hey Descenters,

While the design team was putting some finishing touches on the Tech Trees (as well as a few other design elements), the rest of the team added a bit of polish to the current game. We're looking to push out a new build to the Proving Grounds today (Monday if we run into "issues"). So be sure to look for the build notes Keith writes up for each release.

If you want to play the earliest early access possible as well as provide feedback on the Proving Grounds builds during the Underground Design (featuring and hosted by Keith McCormic) meetings you can if you are a member of the Underground.

One of the great things about being a member of the Underground is that you get a look at features and maps long before anyone else. In fact, we have three player made grayboxed maps in the Proving Grounds right now.

Did you check out Wingman's Hangar today? No? Well you know its published every Friday and, right after the show, the Wingman himself jumps right into the game to take on all comers. This is a great opportunity to introduce Eric to your mega missile!!! Posted Image

Well if you missed Wingman's Hangar today -- no worries -- it's right here:

The Studio Snapshot is always here and today is no exception:

You know, since I mentioned a Proving Grounds release that should be out today, it occurred to me that I could show you a bit of what's in it:

That's it for me.

Have a great weekend.

Week In Review (2/5/2016)

blog-0800652001454704299.jpg

Hey Descenters,

Some interesting doings last week. The team participated in a panel at PAX South 2016. The panel was about indie game development. Our panel was at 8:30 Friday night. Given that time slot on a Friday night, we expected a small turnout. However, much to our delight, the room was packed (about 500 people). If you haven't already, you can see the video of the panel below.

What else happened in the last two weeks?

  • The Shaman went live in the Proving Grounds. There were some bugs -- they're fixed now -- and will go back to the Proving Grounds next week. For those of you not familiar with the Shaman, this ship has some restorative abilities. It is currently capable of repairing the hull, although shield restoration is probably going to be in the mix as well. When we're happy with it, it will go to production.

  • The Frag Cannon was also added to the Proving Grounds last week.

  • Several UI fixes to be released next week.

  • Some awesome feature designs as well (Tech Trees, Economy, and more). In fact, the next Design Underground will be all about the Tech Trees.

  • In furtherance of the role based nature of DU, we've started implementing mining!!

  • A new defensive gadget. Currently being called the Discombobulating Diffusion Defense -- Triple D? Look for this in the Proving Grounds next week.

  • We also have some new levels (developed by the community) currently in internal testing. We are planning on putting these in the Proving Grounds next week. Keep in mind these are gray box levels, so final art is still to come.
