About Darn Time We Get a Monday Blog...

blog-0476448001446512127.jpg

Hello, Descent Community,

There's been a whole lot of discussion in our forums on hit boxes, weapon placement, and the initial experience of people playing Descent: Underground for the first time. This, in turn, led to a rather significant amount of internal discussion, which then led to a new episode of Design Underground about that very same topic.

If you haven't seen it yet, you can take a look at it right here.

The end result of all of this excellent exchange is that we're launching a new version of the game into the proving grounds with the weapons on the ships moved closer together, as well as improved collision detection on weapons and missiles. We think that the game is much more fun now, and we want you to check it out.

All of this should (barring catastrophe) appear on the proving grounds tomorrow, along with a familiar friend. (See blog image for hint...)

If you don't currently have access to the proving grounds, all it takes is a one-month subscription to the Underground, which also comes with even more inside access to the development process.

See you in the Proving Grounds - and Underground!

Week In Review (10/30/2015) aka What's Next?

blog-0427039001446238814.png

Happy Friday,

We will have a couple of new builds to release soon (one next week for sure). The other will be soon after. The first build will have some bug fixes and a bit of polish.

 • We'll notify players of the match objectives (I.E. Be sure to capture the core!!)
 • We've made some adjustments to the in-match and end-of-match scoreboard. I know you like it.
 • The homing missiles have been adjusted to "home" a little more than before :P
 • Speaking of homing missiles, there will be a missile lock warning (only you will hear) telling you when a player has fired a homing missile at you
 • More achievements will be added and you'll get an audio cue telling you when you've earned one
 • Also achievements will be shown in the score sheet (keep in mind that, for now, achievements are per match. However, we'll have permanent achievements very soon)
 • We've also received a lot of feedback regarding the mouse, so we've implemented a new way to use the mouse (yep, you can keep the old style if you like). The "new" mouse will be in the upcoming patch.

The release after this will actually have some bigger features:

 • It will have a way for you to create a match and invite your friends to play in that match!!!!
 • We'll have a new ship to play (probably the Predator)
 • We'll have a new match type!
 • And we are adding the plasma gun!

So some big stuff being added and even more on the way.

Here's a huge thanks to our friends on Crowfall. They gave us a very nice shout out.

Week In Review (10/23/2015) aka Live on Steam Early Access!!!

blog-0354355001445635491.png

Hey Descenters,

As most of you probably already know, we are live on Steam Early Access!

So this week has been all about getting ready for that. The response has been very good so far. In fact, we are already on the Most Popular and Top Seller lists in early access.

Thank you for helping get the word out!

This week's Wingman's Hangar can be seen below...

You can also view this week's Studio Snapshot right here:

BTW, jump on any time and you'll likely get some great opportunities to play against Wingman and crew (at least for the next few days).

Next week, we need to get back on our regular development cycle, so more specific dev tidbits then.

Have fun playing this weekend and be sure to look for me, Bluedog, I'll be the guy chasing you with Quad 4's!

Cheers,

BlueDog

Descent Underground is Steaming ahead!

Hello Descenters!

It has been a very big day here for us at Descendent Studios and everyone that has backed this game to get to this point, it is time to open up the bus and get more people on board.

All of us were having so much fun playing that it made sense for us to take it to Steam. You guys worked hard to get the Greenlight and as such we felt it important to honor those efforts. When the community speaks, we listen.

Click here if you want to get it on Steam, or you can always get it on our site here.

So today at 10am Austin time, we hosted a live version of WingMan's Hangar and pushed that button. If you missed it, you can watch it here.

One of the fun parts about introducing all these new people to our game is teaching them the wonders of a true 6Dof experience, and our very own Dunkelza and Viewmaster put together a fun training video to help out.

Also, we wanted to show you guys a little game play and sort of hinted at the story that is coming up in our Single Player campaign - have a look at that video as well.

It has been a very busy week, and we have a lot more to show as we march forward in bringing Descent back to all of us who loved it, and those of us who are going to love it.

Welcome to the mines and thanks for your support.

Week In Review (10/16/2015)

blog-0140430001445012410.png

Hey Descenters,

We've now opened up the game to even more pilots -- Proving Grounds, Alpha, and Beta backers. I gotta say there are some good ones out there. Having said that, the learning curve isn't really that steep and you can even fly around in solo mode now if you just want to get some practice and tune your controls -- just click the "Test Flight" button.

If you're not playing now, CLICK HERE for instructions.

We've spent most of the week stomping bugs and adding a bit more polish here and there. The bug reporting we've gotten from the community has been great. It is no secret that we're a very small team, so the more folks that play and report issues the better.

How about Design Undeground this week? What? You missed it? In that case, I'll just leave it right here ⇓

Wingman's Hangar is up and ready and here for your viewing pleasure:

This week's Studio Snapshot is here as well!

Be sure to stay tuned, there will be a Steam Early Access announcement very soon.

Cheers,

Hey there, Rock Jocks!

Whew! What a ride these last couple of weeks have been!

Thousands of you jumped in the game and helped us test some of the critical systems. We're not yet onto the full game balance work yet, because we need to get the rest of the ships, weapons, tools, and gadgets into the game.

Speaking of which, we're going to be sticking the Predator back into Proving Grounds for the time being. Its animations and special move aren't working yet, and even without those it's clear we need some more time to balance the little beasty before it sees prime time.

Undergrounder or no, we need your help to continue testing our bug fixes and server settings. We're also planning another server stress test soon... maybe this time with BETA backers!

Oh, in case you missed Rob Irving's Design: Underground, starring Rob Irving:

In other news, we've been talking for awhile about how we're planning to bring Descent: Underground to Steam Early Access (SEA). We're getting closer to being ready to do so. Our plan is to make sure that all of our backers have access to our pre-alpha (here and/or on Steam) before we make it available to the world at large. If you've already redeemed a game package on your account, you've probably noticed the "Coming Soon" message on the Steam Key button- that will light up soon!

We're still going to keep our iterative test plan of sending new features to Proving Grounds, then to Alpha, then Beta, and finally to our SEA "Production" environment. Those of you with testing-level access will still get to try out the cool, new stuff first!

In the coming days, we plan to take the Stretch Goal counter down from our front page. Your friends will still be able to join up and get the game on our site if they'd like, even after we head out to SEA. However...

The Torch will be locked in on the day we go public on Steam. That means that only folks who've pledged here before then will get that particular style of dueling ship. We're going to have a statistically-equivalent duelist, but it's just not going to look as cool as the Torch- just sayin'. So all of you early supporters will get a Torch token added to each of your game packages. It's not ready in-game yet, but if you want a Torch, or know someone who might- now's the time to grab a game package.

Finally, I want to congratulate our T-Shirt Contest winners- Beetleface, LotharBot, Louhikarme, PyroJockey, and Xyphon!

Each one of them grabbed a great photo with one of our t-shirts and shared it on social media!

That's all for now, but BE SURE you are following our Facebook & Twitter, plus all of our Release Notes blogs so that you always have the most up-to-date news. There will be a lot in the coming weeks and we don't want you to miss anything!

Fly safe!

Week In Review (10/9/2015) Alpha Joins Early Access!

blog-0875300001444424556.jpg

Hello Descenters,

This has been a very busy week for the team. If you're a member of The Underground, you've had an opportunity to play the game for a week now and many of you have! I know this because it seems like every time I turned around, someone was hitting me with lasers, vulcan guns, and yes, the dreaded Mega Missile :) . We've received some great feedback that has led to many changes over the last week.

We've now opened up the game to Alpha players as well. We're really hoping to stress the servers, so jump in when you get a chance.

Rather than listing all the bugs fixes here, I'll just point you to the release notes. Here's the latest, but feel free to peruse previously posted notes too!

Let's get right to the videos:

Wingman's Hangar is streamed every Friday, but if you missed it, you can catch it here:

Design Undeground (featuring just Rob this time -- sorry Pixley's Pixels, you'll have to wait till next week). In this episode, Rob talks about map building and shows off some of the tools.

For an inside look at some of the goings on in the studio this week, check out Studio Snapshot:

Well boys and girls, that's it for me this week. If you have alpha access or proving grounds access, jump in, join the fun, and shoot the devs (we'll be on and off during the weekend).

Cheers,

Phil
