As far as I know, I'm not writing music for this game.  But if I was writing music for this game whether or not I knew it, it might possibly sound something like these tracks.

I was curious enough to see what I'd do in that extremely hypothetical situation that I decided to actually do it and the tracks here are the result.

https://dl.dropboxus...orate Bleed.mp3

https://dl.dropboxus...151/Fissure.mp3

https://dl.dropboxus...Drone Sight.mp3

https://dl.dropboxus...Black Ocean.mp3

Corporate Bleed incorporates ambient, atmospheric and some more intense themes.  Since the game's story looks like it's going to incorporate elements of the "space western" genre which I really like, I threw in a tiny tiny little bit of country influence in the bassline and one of the guitars.  The song is otherwise a mix of industrial rock and the cinematic.

Fissure is written in the style of a combat track.  It's split into two sections that I would mean to loop separately, plus an intro and an outro -- the second section starts around 1:10.  It's intense, insane, and ethereal.  Unearthly, even. biggrin.png

Drone Sight is based on a couple of asian instruments that I heard recently and thought would work really nicely with this type of game, and general craziness.  Descent 1 used a lot of shamisens, sitars and kotos in its midi tracks -- although the types of instruments I used here are a little bit different.  This track could be split into four sections -- two of which could work as combat tracks -- and could also loop from start to finish as a multiplayer song.

Black Ocean is a lyrical track based on the game's lore (or what I know of it, anyway tongue.png).  The initial idea was too good to not make and since I'm still trying to figure out what precisely you guys would need, it seemed a good enough plan to keep the thread active in the meantime.

Lyrics are here if you want them: https://dl.dropboxus...ocean lyrix.rtf

Cool! There's some neat riffs in there.

Have you thought about adding some more tension/action intensity?

I'd be willing to change it if I had a reason to.

But purely as a fan song with no other purpose than to be listened to, I think it works best the way it is.  I can't help thinking it would lose a little bit of its depth if the "suspense/intensity" was changed to just "intensity".

In the context of the campaign I don't really know how you intend to script the music and so I don't know exactly what you would need -- I can only guess at that from the way Dan's tracks are put together.  "Corporate Bleed" is written so it could be easily split into sections (a la Descent 3 or Red Faction) or played all the way through.  Something that could theoretically be useful in many different ways.

Anyway, "Fissure" is more intense and written along the lines of a combat track.

I like it very much. It sounds like a prequel to Descent -- in the way Enterprise was a prequel to the 1960's Star Trek. Before the world of Descent became so futuristic that it was a bit removed from modern genres. "Space Western" and more Earthly for sure. Yet, the beginnings of the beats we heard in First Strike, where it sounds a bit like rock filtered through the imagination of a robot. For some reason "level 6" with the drillers comes to mind.

Good Job, Splotchie,

especially, i like the the Theme/Part  from Corporate Bleed between 1:48 and  2:20! (and the increase between 5:09 and 5:58)

Neat Theme and sounds very "Descent"!

It might be awesome if Descent:Underground eventually had a Grand Theft Auto style fictional radio station cycling through futuristic tracks, and there were an in-game file browser in the settings to set up folders it would add to the cycle.

Or heck, maybe even the Crater or something like that could be incorporated. There is a lot of potential for adding your great music to the game in a variety of ways, but this, I think might be a dreamy way. Would be fun to come up with the fictional band names of the future, too. :P

Exciting tracks. The newest one Black Ocean is nice and narrative -- fits snugly with the Corporate Heroes mythos by GroundHound. I wonder what he thinks of it. I think it's bad ass.

Nice!  What tool(s) did you use?  You use a DAW or physical workstation or a combination of different things?

I use FL Studio along with some external plugins and equipment.

I've got an SM-58 mic that I use for most of my actual recording and a midi keyboard/controller that I use for some phrases and automation -- and for just general spontaneity as well. :)

The first two tracks definitely nail the D3 retro vibe especially around 4:20 in Bleed. These cuts work for me as a player and I could hear them as good candidates in Underground but would lean more with the Fissure style as its retro influence is a little more subtle and unique.

Black Ocean is a nice offering and I am impressed that someone would be influenced by the Descent series to compose a track about it but as a personal preference, it just seems that non lyrical compositions work better for the gaming experience overall. Don't be discouraged as you seemed to have gotten some positive comments on this track and the DEV's may really be looking for this sort of thing.

I'll echo what many have said already but I loved the Descent 1 thru 3 series and found it to be one of the most immersive gamming experiences ever and the music/sound was a huge part of that. Peterson and the Descendent team are doing a great job at not only giving this style of gaming a re-boot, but taking it forward by giving this classic franchise the modern polish and attention it so rightly deserves.

The Descendent team seem incredibly receptive to community input so keep up the good work Splotchie. You might just have a couple of your tracks make the cut and what could be better as a player than actually being a part of the fabric of the game .

Absolutely.  I'll just be clear about Black Ocean; it was meant as a fun experiment for me to do, not necessarily as an in-game song.  I would be completely open to doing an instrumental edit of it if they wanted one for the game.  Or, maybe something along its lines could be used for end credits -- that one might be a long shot though. smile.png

...

As the title says this is my scratching post -- I'm throwing any ideas I think of out here because I don't really know what the devs want to do with music for this Descent -- I wouldn't at all be surprised if that's a decision they haven't made yet, since this is something that's generally done late in the development process.  Each of the three "classic" Descents used a completely different system to play its music tracks, I don't want to make the assumption that this game's system would be similar to any of them.  But at the same time, a track that can be sliced into pieces is always pretty versatile.

I am working on a fourth track this weekend, by the way.
