Hi Dunk,

you wrote on the entries that is should be texture only, just for clarity's sake, we don't do any material stuff on this part? since the finished shader would still need different textures to actually show the materials in ue4.

so in short, its just single color texture file you are after at this point?

I'm willing to accept both for the sake of getting more entries, but I suspect that those who submit a fully-realized material rendered on the model will have an advantage in the voting.

I would encourage those who want to make a skin texture and then get it on the model to ask in chat. We have a number of members who do 3D modeling.

Oh, hey, 2D art! Okay, I can try that.

I just need some tips on what software to use to even open the 3D model and then how to paint on a 2D thing and have it show up on the 3D thing.

Or, if anyone finishes an entry skin file with the 3D example of how it's appearing on the model, I'd love to just take a crack at it in GIMP and see if it turns out right. I mean, obviously I am not experienced in the least, but I can do 2D things and this seems like a much easier learning curve.

there are couple that i know. Blender obviously is something you can use for this, then there is, https://www.allegori...bstance-painter and http://3d-coat.com/a...nks/?no_cache=1 also http://quixel.se/ (this requires photoshop though)

I'll save up one texture to show how it shows on the uv layout. though painting directly to the uv layout could be a tad counterproductive since some of the surfaces are bent.  (i'll upload it once i get home)

those that i linked do have their trial downloads available if anyone want to give a shot on those, those basically have the workflow that you paint on the 3d model directly.

for those using blender i just discovered that blender's fbx importer only accepts binary files, and the one that i submitted was ascii. something always. here's the binary version for those who are using blender. http://louhi.1g.fi/k...age3_binary.fbx

follow the link and choose download on the top right corner. sorry for this. if you are using other software's the ascii should be fine.

@defcon_x and anyone else that might only do 2d. here's a pic that i put few words up to show how they are going on the texture. i actually can't recommend enough to try with 3d painting software's since this uv map is bit involved. :(

Okay, what kind of software that is free, more or less 'free' or 'trial' could I use to open the 3D model?

the ones that i linked on the previous message have free trials that eat fbx files.

Wow, Pleasure's entry is smegging kick ass. How am I going to top that?

Well, I'd still like to give it a go, so I will try as often as I can to download Substance Painter until I get it and can play with it. Exciting. Looks fun to do. I have a 30 day time limit on the free trial so ... but let me see even what I can do in a week.

Pleasure's work is great, we were talking last night about the texturing. funnily i had picked almost same color scheme in substance painter. :D you can also see the smart material layering on the right with masks.

also with substance painter, there is 4 vertex material groups aswell on the left side, those have their own layers. so if you are wondering why certain parts vanish while you paint, it is because of the selection on the _left_ side that has "base_steel", Glass, red_glow and blue_glow. those i separated for the ue4 so they can be assigned different setting.

Oh no! I finally downloaded the half-gig thing and it says I need a 64bit architecture OS. Argh! I mean, I guess I could just try to edit what y'all have if I could get it in 2D stuff, but it looks like Substance Painter is the way to go and my system doesn't have the chops for it.

Ok so someone has to go wild with this and make coloured panels like in d1.

Wouldn't it be easier to read if this was on Comic Sans?

AP I would think that is indeed how it would be. With all its heat and fire some baking and pealing of paint would occur just not over the entire thing but where the fire power and torches spray out and by the vents where flames arise. .  Also well as any patina from scrapes and bumps it take in its daily actions on it.

Pleasure those metal panels look spot on. The visor needs some work as it should let you see the "eyes" behind it a bit. Like a tinted window. You should be able to see the eyes watching/tracking you to give that intimidation factor.

Peas that is a monster! Try a black visor, such that you can still see the red glowing eyes behind. Also give the visor some kind of a rim / frame. If you don't care about originality the golden rims from d1 would look really good here :)

They say those that can't, teach.

I guess those that can't do either become critics. Hence ...

@AngryPeas : AWESOME! Scary! This thing has been around a while in a terrifying mine.

@Louhikarme : Beautiful. Also love the 'Descent'-y colors. Kinda precursor to warm-colored bots from original series. The only critique I'd have is that since the sensors are undoubtedly improvements on human vision for the purposes of mining, that 'glass' doesn't need to be like a welder's eye shielding. It can be more transparent so we can see the glowing red eyes (once glow effect is applied). Although the sunglasses appearance with the color does make it look very 'Arizona' and that's fun. :)

The burnt paint is looking spot on AngryPeas. The whole drone does for that matter.

I like the Tonka truck yellow industrious look of yours too Louhikarme. All of these drones will be a for a good choice in the game IMO. Variants maybe? Boss / worker drones.
