Between now and noon next Monday, June 15, 2015 we need you to:

Write a Design Specification for the bot

Ideally, entries should describe its in-game function/role, its general ability levels, and any special abilities/animations.

Feel free to talk with the folks in the art competition for ideas (and vice versa)- or to enter the art path yourself.

This thread is only for entries. The entire entry should be in one post.

If you post multiple entries, please flag them in the order you want them considered. If we have a lot of submissions, we may have to limit the number of entries per person.

Name: BlowTorch bot(s) also known as Flame bot(s). The boss versions may be named Pyro Bot(s) These names tie into the games naming convention well.

Function: This should be a level/map boss type bot. It what you might find at the end of a map or level. You may well fined smaller more basic Jr versions of him floating around any part of the map as a general mob. He would guard or prevent you from leaving the level or map and would have to be taken out in order to proceed. It can also be used as a sentry to guard entrances and areas of special value to the Mega corporations. It can stay in one position or patrol a small area.

Weapons: It's main weapons would be plasma cutters and high pressure flame torches. These types of weapons make its attack short to mid range at best. It does serious damage up close and personal. It's main objective is to carve you drone to smoking bits. It can also spay fire on you for some limited fire damage. So just flying past or near and running can still leave your hull flaming and smoking and lightly damaged.

Some specs: It is pretty well built and can take some damage. Has moderate shielding and would be around the size of other boss type bots. It would be equipped with a pair of plasma cutters and pair of high pressure blow torches. It also spray nozzles near it's torch ends to spray sticky flaming liquid at near or passing by drones and bots for a limited light damage attack.

Special Animation: It's special animation would be it's always lite flame on its entire body. It's pretty much on fire. The flame can be red, blue, green, purple, and yellow depending on its anger level. It starts out yellow and progresses to reds and purples as you get hits on it upset it.

Name: Advanced Solvent Striker, also known as: ASS, also known as: Dissolver

Role: Originally, the robot caused more harm than good to the creators. The idea was that the robot could mix different rock dissolving agents in real time to efficiently melt the rock and leave the useful minerals unharmed. The mixture was too hard for the bot to get right every time, so now the only models in use are engineered to work as a defense system. EDIT: The robot can also destroy big rock walls in a short time, but is slow at making tunnels. If you can come up with something fun that can be done with dissolvers, make sure to make a comment in the discussion! :D

Weapons: 1x acid cannon.
The acid cannon is a short range hose, capable of spraying damage dealing agents in front of it. The acid comes out of the cannon in a smoke like form and linger in the air for a brief moment before dispersing. The clouds not only deal damage: if you get too close to the stream your cargo could be harmed!

Functions: The robot is sturdy and fast, but not too agile. The robot isn't too accurate with it's acid cannon, but it can make a big room appear very small with the acid flying around. Make sure to destroy these robots fast! I've planned for 3 different modes: stand still and guard, destroy a wall of rock, and keep your back (full of acid). In the last mode the robot follows you, shooting acid in an area behind your ship. Because the acid lingers in the air for some time (say, 7 seconds), this can be used in small tunnels while running away from your enemy! Bigger tunnels might not be filled with the stuff, but the chaser will have to maneuver between the clouds! Destroy a rock wall is simple, shoot at any target, and the robot will TRY to clear it the surface around the object with acid. This can be used to rock walls, making the robot peel a nice area of the rock. Other use would be to fill a doorway with acid for a short while.

Example of a dogfight: Now even though this is a prequel, we should really take another step fourward and give the bots some very intelligent moves. Here is an example of a low skill pilot fighting a hard difficulty dissolver bot.

You approach the mining area when you notice, that someone has left a dissolver bot guarding the area. You get closer silently in order to land the first hit. The bot hears you and starts to turn, and you start shooting it with lasers. Suddenly, the robot aims his gun arm behind his back, shooting you. You will make a quick turn behind him in order to dodge, but some damage has already been done. You try to get your aim back, but the robot has started moving around you with a fast speed. You realise you need to stop chasing him with your aim, and retreat into the distance. Meanwhile, the robot has sprayed acid all around your slow moving ship, and you take some damage as you retreat. While you try to run away from the short range of the acid cannon, the robot does something we've never seen before. He rushes towards you, with the speed of a trichording predator, and destroys the last bits of your hull with the acid cannon.

In descent 3 I use a lot of similar tactics while fighting the robots. Now what if you were an expert pilot?

As you see the robots back, you get closer and make the gambit with lasers. The robot hears this, and moves enough to dodge a few beams of laser. Then, you notice the robot can shoot behind his back, and you make a quick dodging maneuver with slide controls, while continuously dealind damage with lasers. The robot realises it's weakness, and again, does something never seen. It starts shooting the area in front of him, and runs through the clouds. You try to follow it with your full speed and afterburners, but you also need to dodge the clouds of acid between you and the bot. In this time, the robot has turned around and started to shoot at your predicted flypath. But, an experienced pilot like you doesn't get afraid. You maneuver between the slow acid stream and the lingering clouds, and do the final shots on the robot. A bright explosion occurs, and all the remaining acid in the robots tanks burn fast into a black smoke. You gather the dropped nanite concentrations and rush to your next fight.

Name: ChamBer (Chameleon Berserker)

Role: Seek out opponents bots/drones and pose as them in order to self destruct and take out your enemy.

Weapons: It's ability to mimic whatever bot/drone you deploy it for. The high cost of the "mimic" cloak makes this expensive to deploy, and requires the ship deploying it to find and partially neutralize the perspective bot/drone without destroying it. When your opponent comes to collect or call it home, it waits until it is in close proximity to the target and destructs in a large nuclear blast.

Weaknesses: Since it must "mimic" another bot/drone, the energy cost is high. The fact that it can't "self deploy" also incurs risk. It also sends out a low level "call home" periodically to keep in touch. A wary opponent can listen for this signal to avoid surprised.

Name: Squiddy bot
Callsign: Jaeger

Role: Ostensibly it was a mining bot sold under the name Squiddy bot, with a strong short range cutting laser and tentacles to load the ore in the hauler. It's true function however was that of a Hunter for Search and Destroy missions.

Design: Picture a robotic squid, sleek and beautiful, it looks like its swimming as it fly's through the mines and Underground. When it catches up to its prey, its tentacles spread out making it very dangerous up close.

Weapon: powerful short range cutting laser, 4-8 Strong tentacle arms that can grip or pound your drone should you let one get too close.

Special ability: Smoke Screen or Ink as the drone pilots call it. Sometimes it's more effective to simply let your prey come to you. When a Jaeger bot finds itself alone will slink off to a dark corner, release its Ink to further conceal its position, and power down all but its scanners while it waits for its next victim. It takes a pilot with a sharp eye and healthy dose of paranoia to spot a Jaeger hidden in it's Ink. Oddly enough pilots have confirmed that Jaeger bots will never be hidden in Ink if there are more then one around instead they hunt as a pack.

Name: The Spinner

Design: Fat Round shaped Bot that looks like a Spinning top (like the child's toy)

Defenses: Stronger Armor on its top and bottom, weaker armor on its sides/front/back

Attack Style: Attacks a single opponent directly, Slow moving but can turn quickly in any direction and quickly fires bursts of multiple slow moving projectiles that deal moderate to large damage.

Special Ability: when under attack by more than one opponent it spins like a top sending out many slow moving projectiles in all directions along its horizontal plane, Its weakness when doing this is it is slow to change the direction it is spinning in so it will have areas above and below which are free of projectiles until it can either stop spinning and restart, or until it alters the direction of its axis/spin which can only happen slowly while it is spinning

Power-up: Beware if this bot finds a CaramelSauce power-up (like BlossomSauce but a different flavor) because for a limited time (3 to 5 seconds) it can spin quickly in multiple directions at once continuously firing projectiles. but this is not triggered until it has 3+ enemies nearby. has a 5 to 10 second cool down where it will block almost all attacks with its heaver top and bottom armor by spinning to deflect the incoming attacks, cannot use again until it crosses another CaramelSauce power-up

Edit: I have posted a 2d design of it in the Art Path Thread. http://descendentstu...ntries/?p=18958
Although it may look more like a ball than a spinning top :)
Am thinking of having the center segment revolve horizontally, and it can only slowly turn in other directions overall while this is happening.

Name: Maggie (short for "magnetic grappling extractor")

Function: The "maggie", as it's called by most pilots, is a mid-sized drilling bot designed to extract iron compounds from ore dust.

Weapons: Maggie has a central, extendable drill surrounded by three magnetic claw-tips.  The drill is normally used to break up rock formations, and the magnetic claws attract the fragments with high iron content.

Special: while "Maggie" is theoretically a mining bot, there are reports of it being reprogrammed to ambush other drones, and left dormant in asteroids where a corp wants to defend its claim.  A "Mad Maggie" will typically hide in a natural crevice, or drill its own, and then wait for a metallic signature to get close.  It will then spring out of its hiding place, latch on to a drone's hull, and begin drilling.  It deals severe damage, and will only break its hold if the ship it's attached to engages in high-G maneuvers or smashes it against an obstacle.

Weakness: Mad Maggies that have been reprogrammed for ambushes have unsophisticated targeting selection.  They will typically respond to any metallic signature, including drones, other mining bots (even other Maggies), or even missiles that get close enough.  This behavior can sometimes be exploited by baiting Maggies into the open or even by getting them to ambush one another.

Name: Repair bot

Function: Uses a large arm to simulate a mill and lathe to repair ships or items or lift heavy weights. Also posses 4 smaller arms used for detail work.

Design: The large arm sits upon the top of the robot, and resembles a crane arm. The large arm posses four degrees of freedom (including being able to turret 360 degrees), is capable of working in any direction, and can serve as a drill, wielder, polisher, or riveter. Four smaller arms are mounted on the back of the robot, and are capable of the same actions, but are used for detail or high precision work. These arms can also rotate 360 to assist the main arm, and work independently of each other. The torso of the robot houses a bellypan that can drop down to act as a conveyor belt or holder. If used as a conveyor belt, the pan brings objects closer to or further away from the arms, allowing it to hold multiple parts at once for repairs. The inner torso of the robot holds tooling for all of the arms. The base of the robot houses many magnetic hooks to distribute its mass evenly.

Special: Can be modified to make parts or even use the magnet hooks on the bottom of its base to attach to a ship to repair it in flight. Using its tread legs, it can even move around the shop to repair different areas.

Weakness: Cannot fight or withstand much damage. Repair bots attached to ships can easily be shot off. Repair bots sent off from bases onto robot require a set of materials to repair your ship. Once this set runs dry, they're useless until they're refilled!

Name: Psybot

Function: Used as control bots, these were used to guide other bots to the highest ore deposits on the asteroids.  Now it has a much more nefarious purpose.  If a pilot is detected by the Psybot, it calls all other bots within a radius to attack the intruding pyro.

Design: Small, very fast, forever patrolling the assigned mine.  This robot has a laser that does minimal damage that it 'paints' the target for other bots to begin mining/attacking. Because this bot is used for scouting out new and sometimes unstable areas, it has heavy shields for its size and therefore is harder to take out then a normal bot.  With its small size and ability to fit into tight places this bot is sometimes over looked and with its speed it can run away from cave in's or other damage dealing threats.

Special: when too much damage it taken the Psybot explodes dealing damage and (in the past opened up the mine) can do heavy damage to a pyro.  Which means once it takes a certain amount of damage it will rush whatever or whomever is damaging it to remove the threat from the worker bots.

Weakness : homing missiles seem to have the best affect on these bots.

Name : Von Neumann Foundry

Function : Its a Von Neumann Foundry. It makes more Von Neumann Foundries, just like any good Von Neumann machine. I assume it would just stick to an ore vein and mine it, replicating out-of-control.

Abilities : I would think it should only have limited offensive capabilities and no defensive capabilities. Its function is to overwhelm opponents with sheer numbers, burrowing into vein after vein and consuming all the raw materials it can find. This means that enemies should probably focus on destroying it early, while there are so few of them.

Single Player : It could be a regular environmental enemy, but I can imagine one whole level that's absolutely infested with Von Neumann Machines run amok.

Mutliplayer : Here's the fun bit. Strategically it makes a lot of sense to get a scout to drop some of these annoyances in seams near the enemy spawn, which can operate as a diversionary tactic, causing them to focus their energy on removing the infestation. Or, if they don't deal with it or don't notice it, they will have to deal with a swarm of relatively weak (but plentiful) enemies, who have completely mined out some seams near their base. Perhaps ruining their economy by attrition.

I'm flagging this one as my favorite of the ideas that I posted. I think it would add a lot to the dynamics of the game.

Name : The Cuddler

Function : Loves you. Impediment to movement.

Abilities : Its a heavy orb with a large array of tentacles that just loves drones so much that it hugs them and won't let go, throwing off the weight balance of your ship, making your ship a little bit larger and harder to fit through narrow passage ways, easier to spot, and reducing engine performance and maneuverability (because its heavy)

Name: Integrated Psychological Warfare and Machine Intelligence Automota (PSYOP/MACINT Bot)

Nickname: Oh god not that thing, kill it quick, or any number of other 4 letter words.  Hitherto referred to as "BITCHBOT"

Function/Description: The bright idea of a long forgotten corporation as they started to get into actual warfare, this bot has gained notoriety in its ability to piss off everyone yet still remain useful enough to be in common usage.  In its most basic function the BITCHBOT observes non-authorized personal in an area and relays that information to a central location.  Using its camouflage system it can often go undetected for long periods of time.  Upon detection of high energy or high speed emenations (weapons, mining lasers, etc) it switches into PSYOP mode and begins loudly distracting, annoyingly and gratingly reminding the offending party that it is not where it should be and generally carrying on cantakerously.  This serves the purpose of driving the offending party nuts and drawing anyone (bot and human alike) nearby to what could have hitherto been a hidden threat.  It also begins utilizing a strong strobe beam to attempt to blind/distract or highlight an offending entitty.  Visually I picture it as looking like an oversized disco ball with shifting mirrors.

Abilities: When not in PSYOP mode, the BITCHBOT is very hard to spot utilizing active and passive camouflage systems.  When in PSYOP mode, its small size, rapid and erratic motion and overall toughness make it very difficult to dispose of without the overwhelming application of tactical explosives... i.e. blow everything up.  Its only weapons is a high powered directional strobe beam.

Name: Warp Bot

Function: Warps the space around it, oscillating between being a gravity well and pushing stuff away. While sucking stuff in, it gets spikey. But will probably get more kills by smashing stuff into cavern walls when the force inverts. The effect would diminish markedly with distance. I would expect that the target would be much easier to hit while being a gravity well, drawing in missiles and bullets. But while its pushing, I would expect missiles to take a lot longer to hit it (since the missile's motor needs to overcome the pushing force), bullets would probably veer away, but energy weapons (I suspect) should still hit.

Name : Salesman

Function : Infects the feed between your drone and the pilot with pop up ads. If you only had the new JARVIS DYNAMICS computer system on board, which can jam those signals. Jarvis Dynamics: Secure Control Systems to Protect Your Privacy and Peace of Mind!

Appearance : Would probably have a radar dish looking thing on it, and otherwise be as inconspicuous as possible.

Uses : Can be left as a mine in order to distract / annoy pursuers, or otherwise just to harass enemies. Certain types of customization should block the effectiveness of this drone. I'm not sure how much hardware customization will be allowed ingame, but if there is quite a bit, you might have to make a choice between, say, a sensor system that has a range of 10 but is unshielded and one with a range of 8 but is shielded. (etc).

Might be a nice tie-in to the corporate fiction, as well as a vessel for advertising new ingame content  ;)

Name : Lothar Bot

Function : Really nice guy, but is really nice to everybody. Wanders around giving perks and powerups and being otherwise friendly and encouraging. Might also deploy Maggie bots.

In Game : Nice to have near you, but maybe you should make sure it doesn't wander over to your enemy's side of the cavern. Keep an eye on it! If it wanders too far, can you bring yourself to shoot down one of these nice friendly bots? You monster!  :P

Are you serious about the name? : Halfway. I think it would be cool, but obviously should ask Lothar first.

Name Swarm (better name pending)

Function Area denial and monitoring

In game Swarm bots were designed as a self-installing security system in the mines. Pump a bunch of them them into an asteroid, and they'd spread out, to warn you of and attack any intruder.
like most things built by the lowest bidder, they're not very good. Individually, their laser is not all that powerful, their wake time is slow (you have a second or so between them seeing you and attacking), and a bug in the code means that they only send an alert with any real 'volume' (read: signal strength), when they take damage. By themselves, they are little more than a nuisance.
The trouble comes when they do alert each other. Like bees, they will call for reinforcements then turn nasty and will attack anything in sight (pro tip: if you see one near someone else, shoot it then hide so it locks onto them instead). Unlike bees, they can choose to heal each other or attack their prey (making the swarm nastier than the sum of its parts). Also, unlike bees, a swarm of critical mass will explode in a glorious chain reaction wiping them all out at once (and potentially their target too)..

Advanced low/zero gravity mining robot (you gotta have more mining bots right :) )

(talked this about with Firedragon also during the weekend so with any luck he'll have drawing up aswell soon)

equipped with dual mining beams on the front. After this is cylindrical piece that connects 3  crane arms that have foldable plate shielding. these arm can move the plate shield in different positions shielding itself from falling or drifting rocks thats gets spin out from the lasers or incase of a rockslide.

looking from front view these cranes would be on the sides and top. and then rotate through that axis.

Name: Preliminary Mobile Coordinator

In-game function: This bot detects mineral content in asteroids than cannot be reliably detected from a distance (because they are too deep or have significant impurities). It is used by smaller "bottom feeder" corporations to mine asteroids that larger corporations have presumed exhausted or did not appear to contain significant mineral content from a remote scan. The mobile coordinator has toothed treads that allow it to travel along surface of asteroids (or abandoned tunnels) to provide a deeper and more thorough scan. Once it finds minerals, detects a competing corporation, or is attacked, it summons additional bots with a report of what it has found, and attempts to escape and/or find another vein.

Because these bots are used by smaller corporations to explore sites that may not have much mineral content, they are inexpensive. If armed, they have only a light turret.

 “The LadyBug”

In-game function/role: Mining Defense

Lore:
<< Unknown Lore : Corp Name >> was looking to build a compact bot with easy maintance. And easy to use for newer miner pilots. Seeing defense being one of the key points of issues, and an entra shield generator was the Lady Bug was installed.

Having said this, the underside is not protected. So Haphazard pilots have found themselves crushed from below by collapsing the mine shaft into themselves! (or by sneaky others who found ways to do the same or get a shot into the “soft” underbelly.

Special abilities/animations:

Shield Generator
This is an extended shield. It protects on a sphere-ish but cut through the middle. So the bottom isn’t defended. This is intentional as this underside is devoted to a mining laser. The bug Deploys to where it mines and sets in place with an extra shield generator.
Game Rule: When the Shield is deployed, the Lady Bug Can’t Move. And It can’t be moving to be deployed.

The shield generator is represented by the Lady Bug Wings and can deploy for a speed boost. This is effectively moving the shield generator panels out of the way for the exhaust ports to be more efficient.  However while deployed for speed the Shield Generator can not be used.
Game Rule: IF moving about X Speed, wings are out, otherwise wings retract

The shield generator comes out from spots on the wings, giving the lady bug look and hence the name.
