Hello everyone!

I've made an installer for DXX-Rebirth and DXX-Retro that will make it much easier to install. No more copying game files and such, just download, run, and go! smile.png

You can download the Rebirth installer here: DXX-Rebirth Installer

You can check out the source here: Rebirth Installer Github Source

And the Retro installer here: DXX-Retro Installer

It's source is here: Retro Installer Github Source

Retro is a mod of DXX-Rebirth which is geared towards the competitive multiplayer community.

Here's a bit of info on the addons available from within the installer:

1. Vertigo for D2 (This was an official expansion created by Interplay. You need the original Vertigo files to install it)

2. Descent Maximum (This is a total conversion of D2 to the PS1 version. To uninstall it delete, or change the extension of D2XR-MAXIMUM.DXA in the main D2X-Rebirth folder)

3. Mission Packs (These are collections of missions. The Rangers are the main multiplayer community currently and they have created both anarchy and co-op mission packs for people to use. The Descent Championship Ladder [DCL] is a group of highly competitive players who challenge each other to 1v1 matches. They have their own missions pack available as well)

4. Soundtracks (These are high-quality recordings of the original MIDI soundtracks in lossless format. If the MIDI music you hear isn't what you remember, one of these packs may be more similar to the soundboard you had back in the day, and therefore will sound like the way you remember it. There are also Redbook audio tracks available as well. After downloading the soundtracks you will have to manually move one of them into the main Rebirth folders from the "Soundtracks" folder to enable it.)

5. German Briefing (This is an addon that converts the text of the briefings into German)

The installer will automatically install an addon that fixes the sound from D1 assets (robots and doors and such) in D2. If you like hearing those sounds all sped up and such, just delete or rename the extension of UUD2SP.DXA in the main D2X folder.

If you find any bugs, report them here and I'll get them fixed ASAP smile.png

_________________

Notes:

1. When you uninstall, you are given the option of removing the installation folders or not. If you select yes it will remove the D*X-Rebirth folders and everything in them (including any missions or anything you may have installed).

2. Though zico and Drakona maintain Rebirth and Retro respectively, I maintain the installers, so if there's an issue, bug me, not them wink.png

A note that there are several recorded versions of the midi nusic of different sound synths that were used. I personally favor the awe32 since thats what i had and after listening to the others i think i like it the best still. You can also get the redbook audio as well for D2. All of these are in dxa format. Makes it much easier than using the original cd which i rather keep in it's case. Though i did rip the tracks to mp3s before finding the dxa format.

Forgot how much i like the credits music for d2.

Maybe a noob question, but when focusing only on single player, there's much of an advantage using this Installer compared with D2x-XL ?

The installer is just an installer.

What does matter is the source port itself. In the case of this installer, it installs Rebirth port, which is very different from D2X-XL.

DXX-Rebirth is more straightforward and close to the old-school vanilla descent, and on the other side D2X-XL offers extra enchancements like high-res textures, models, mods, and some extra gameplay elements, although it requires a bit more of configuration.

So the election is yours! :)

Yeah, the choice between rebirth/retro and XL is largely one of what you're looking for in the game.  (I currently have both installed.  I also have some of the old versions of d1x from the late 1990s.)

XL has fancier graphics, which you can mostly turn off to make it look original.  Rebirth/Retro is more original.

XL has a lot of gameplay options that make it feel a little different, but which you can turn off.  Rebirth/Retro feels pretty original straight out of the box.

XL allows you to play levels with brand new gameplay elements.  Rebirth/retro does not.

XL has only limited testing by a small number of pilots.  Rebirth/retro has been heavily tested for correctness by a hard-core community -- people who play ordinary single player, cold starts, speed runs, cooperative modes, and competitive multiplayer.

So if your goal is original flight, original bot behavior, stuff like that, go with Rebirth+retro.  If that doesn't matter as much but you like your game to look really shiny, or you want to try some of the special new elements, go with XL.

I just updated the OP...the installer now includes a lot more soundtracks, as well as automatically uses the Retro tracker when the Retro icons are used.

That moment when you look at your code and think "wow, was I really that dumb?" lol

Apparently the installer wasn't properly installing the Ranger mission packs, nor the D2 DCL pack. This is fixed now, so I'd recommend anyone who wants them, either go download them from the official locations (Rangers website and DCL website), or re-run the installer.

My worry is that I never played the original, and the 20 or so people that still play this game will make it not fun because they will be so much better than me.

I am looking forward to all of us starting out from ground zero together with DU.

So, my question is how much disparity is it for a new player? Is it worth the time to jump into something where folks are that much better and there is no way to possibly catch up?

Kudos to the Devs for taking the risk and bringing a beloved old franchise back from the dead - ignore the whiners - stay the course, this game is awesome.

I believe that they self level - though you are right, that is what a good matchmaking system does and it is why rankings or leveling is something to consider in matchmaking.

Theres always a way to catch up in this type of game. Even veteran players will most likley have a learning curve due to the different play style. Some will be just better from just being good at games in general. I def recommend getting use to the flight system of the previous descents while you can.

So, with Rebirth, I can join in on a network game?   If so, can you point me to a server?

Rebirth (Or Retro) itself doesn't have any servers...individual people host their own games which then are shown on a tracker for other people to join.

We normally organize games on Mumble (or sometimes in the D:U chat)

The Mumble server is mumble.descentrangers.com on port 31393.

But if you just go to "Join multiplayer game" from inside Rebirth it will show any currently hosted games on the tracker, and if it's open you can hop in.

be aware that rebirth and rebirth-retro use different trackers (due to differences in the game type).  If you used AFP's installer to install retro, it will default to the retro tracker at http://retro-tracker.game-server.cc/ (there's config info on that page if you don't yet have the retro tracker set up.)

Ive tried using the retro mod on linux, which is what I use most of the time, and it says the communication version or something is higher than what everyone uses and I cant play along side of anyone. Just figured I'd let you know, and I believe mac version is the same way, so only the people with windows can actually play in retro mod in multiplayer.

Retro versioning is a tad confusing at this point...here's the skinny:

Currently there are three versions of Retro in the wild. 1.3, 1.3a, and 1.4X3. 1.3 and 1.3a are the same version, but 1.3a has a fix for D2 that isn't needed in D1 (and if you try to join a 1.3a game with 1.3 it won't work).

1.4X3 is an experimental build of 1.4 which hasn't been released yet (though it's coming soon). I would say about 75% of games use 1.3/1.3a and 25% use 1.4X3.

On Linux you need to compile commit b223a0e5a1f0d4020a85ecb7c0853e08384fec24 to get 1.3/1.3a.

You need commit 9075f8f6a99ab93581d04b702a42591a85442228 for 1.4X3. I've personally copied both of those over to /usr/bin after compiling so I can just run d*x-1.3 or d*x-1.4 depending on what version people are using.

Currently there are only mac builds for 1.3/1.3a, so if you're on a mac, ask people to use 1.3 instead of 1.4.

My Windows installer currently installs 1.3/1.3a. I will change it to 1.4 once it's released.

I hope that clears it up for you! :)

It's almost as if the developer would rather play than run a software project, and was in the middle of pushing to get another version out when something massively distracting happened. ;)

Uhh . . . yeah. Sorry for the mess. It isn't normally that way, or at least it isn't normally this bad, or at the very least, I like to think it isn't normally this bad.
