Week In Review (5/15/2015) Hey Everyone!

Another productive week for the Descent: Underground project. The art team is really putting the pedal to the metal and creating some great concepts, as well as, in-game assets. Below, we have some WIPs to show -- some are still concepts, some are game assets in progress. In any case, let us know what you think! BTW, the thumbnail to the left is a mood piece for tunnels in the map we are building now.

And if you missed today's episode of Wingman's Hangout here it is:

Join us every Friday at 11am CDT for a new episode, and you can post your questions for FFForum Feedback here.

Art is not the only focus. Map designs are underway, power-ups are being developed, Rob is continuing to flesh out the game design, tech designs for flight mechanics and ship systems, a big revamp to the website, and more.

By the way, if you'd like to see our design meetings, all you have to do is join The Underground.

Viewmaster put this week's meeting on Youtube.

Although this one is open to all, the future Design Underground meetings will only be available to members of The Underground.

Power-ups:

Below are some concepts Kaji whipped up for the cloaking power-up. Very nice!

How about these concepts for the afterburner power-up?

Here's a more detailed concept of a tunnel:

As all of you know, we are always interested in hearing from you. Head to the forums to let us know what you think about art, gameplay, process (ha! good one!) or just about anything.

Have a great weekend,

I'm liking the direction of that drone bay.

looking great. :) 2 or 6 from the cloaks, and 5 from afterburner.

Are these power-ups going to be static looking icons or animated, because if animated, you could actually use a few of them.

For example: The cloaking one just sitting there could start off looking like 6, then cycle through 7, then to 5 with the ship inside disappearing, then back to 7, then back to 6 with the ship re-appearing, wash, rinse, repeat. When picked up, the image could stay with you for a moment where the sphere starts decreasing in size while the derezzing animation plays similar to either 10 or 4 until the sphere is gone. Visually, it'd give the sense of something disappearing, and you could figure out what it does without having to look it up or try it out.

Same with the afterburner, it could cycle through 1, 4, 6, then back to 1, to kind of show momentary bursts of power, and when picked up, the little holograph projector could split and open up like in 7, switch to something that looks like pistons cranking similar to 5, concluding with the projectors coming back together and disappearing. Fairly obvious it's going to increase engine power in some way.

I've never really liked a static looking image that just rotates around or fades in and out. 30 years ago, I got it, hardware constraints meant that some things had to be sacrificed for the good of the overall, but these days... Shouldn't be an issue.
