Week In Review (5/27/2016)

Hey Descenters,
How's tricks?
Don't look now but co-op is very nearly ready and will be published soon -- very soon for those of you in the Underground. On top of that the dumpste.... err uh Goliath has some additional capabilities. Mining will become very important in single player as well as some multi-player games.
Be sure to read the patch notes Undergrounders, but here's a few highlights:
  • Ships have a bit more health
  • As mentioned above, Co-op
  • Both the smart and homing missiles have had a few tweaks
  • And, of course, more!
Wingman's Hangar is here:

Sadly, no studio snapshot this week Posted Image
Have a good one Descenters!
Cheers,

Week In Review (5.13.2016)

Hey Descenters,

Last week, we delivered not one but two builds (ok, yeah the second one was to fix some broken stuff in the first one) and we're still chugging. Let's talk about some stuff we worked on this week:

  • The Deactivator. What? Yep, the deactivator is a special attack in the Warlock's arsenal. It gives the Warlock the ability to steal power-ups from its target. Random -- for now.
  • More Bots! Incendius is about to have some friends.
  • Co-op is taking shape. This, for now, is Survival mode. The bot AI is much improved and we have a new map just for this. We'll also add some achievements for this game mode.
  • Designopotamus has adjusted the ship stats. Get in there, fly, fight and let us know if he got it right.
  • Much more -- including some secret stuff I'm working on. Don't tell Rob!

A big Wingman's Hangar this week, take a look!

How about that Studio Snapshot:

BTW, if you're around on Fridays about 11:30 AM CST or so, you can jump into the game with the team while we live stream. Trust me, there is no more fun than killing Pixley!

Cheers,

Week In Review (5.6.2016)

Hey Descenters,
We've pushed new releases to both Proving Grounds and Production this week.
Some fun and cool additions to the game.

Let's start with Production:
  • Both the Panzer and Typhoon have had their special abilities improved!
  • Fusion Cannon!!! This is a beast (if you score a hit). It also has a risk/reward component to it.
  • Kill message improvements. You'll now see not only who killed you but also with what!
  • We've moved to Unreal 4.11.2. Lots of general improvements with this release.
  • Sound attenuation improvements.

In addition to a new Production build, we've moved even more to Proving Grounds:

  • The Warlock has a special tool that unlocks secret doors. We're also implementing a Warlock tool that can steal power-ups from opponents -- not in this build though.
  • The Goliath can now build "bricks" . These can be used to seal off tunnels or other passage ways. Don't worry though, they are destructible.
  • A number of fixes to VR.
For a complete list, along with known issues, check out the Proving Grounds release notes.

Here's the famous Studio Snapshot:

Get your Wingman's Hangar right here:

Hope all of you enjoy the new builds and please let us know on the forums.

Week In Review (4.29.2016)

Hey Descenters,

You may have been wondering what we've been up to this week. Well, let's get right to it.

  • We had an odd bug hit our weapons system. It took a bit to figure out and fix, but it is fixed now. This was one reason we haven't released anything new into the wild lately.
  • The Typhoon Spin Attack has been modified. It is no longer a toggle on/off, but rather a short burst followed by a cool down.
  • We have some sound occlusion implemented. Essentially, if there are walls between you and the SFX, the sound will be attenuated.
  • The Panzer shield is ready for the Proving Grounds.
  • The Warlock special abilities are currently being developed. Look for those in-game soon.
  • We're looking into (farther along than that actually) giving players the ability to use a tone for power up notifications rather than the current voice notification. If you aren't interested in being notified when you pick up a power up, you can already turn it off. Just slide the power up slider all the way to the left.

Look for these and more in the Proving Grounds and production very soon.

Ready for this week's Wingman's Hangar? No? Too bad here it is... Posted Image

We haven't had a studio snapshot in a while, but we do today. Enjoy!

If you missed out on some of the cool stuff we are doing, check out Tyler in this week's livestream that follows WMH.

That's gonna do it for me this week. Have a great weekend.

Week In Review (4.22.2016)

Hey Descenters,

Some big developments this week -- not quite ready for the Proving Grounds -- but close:

  • Co-op! We've implemented and internally tested the first shot at Co-op! Although it needs some tweaks, it was really fun and will be going to the Proving Grounds soon.
  • New and improved AI. This goes hand-in-hand with the new co-op game mode. The AI is MUCH smarter and tougher than what's out there now and is pretty challenging. It will go out with the new co-op mode but will also change how VS Bots plays as well.
  • Our first test of a European server. We've had lots of requests for this and this week we got one up and running. As expected, if you are in the US but playing on a EU server, the ping times are a tad higher, but our EU players will (and have internally) see much better performance. It is not publicly available just yet.
  • Panzer Blast Shield. We've been playtesting this for a few weeks now and it's been great. We did make a change yesterday. It used to reduce the damage the Panzer (and very nearby allies) would take from all weapons, however, now we've decided to limit it to energy based weapons.
  • Impact SFX. As many have noticed (including us), it can be a bit hard to tell when you're getting hit. To that end, we're now prioritizing impact hit SFX, so the player will hear them more clearly.
  • Continuing to design and implement our tutorial modes.
  • More Bots. We have some additional bots in development now. The basic idea is that each bot will have its own set of behaviors. Some bots will also have their own weapons.

Wingman's Hangar is back!

That's it from me this week.

Have a great weekend,

Week In Review (4.15.2016)

Hey Descenters,

This week, the team added a few things I mentioned last week:

  • Panzer Blast shield. The blast shield will protect the Panzer as well as nearby allies. We're still testing this, but it should be available soon.
  • Co-op gameplay. Rob's been very busy designing and building out the co-op levels and designing co-op play.
  • Greatly improved AI. The first version of the new AI was playtested this week (internally). Needless to say it is quite a bit more challenging than what we have today. You'll get to experience it soon.
  • Training missions have been designed and now we just need to implement them.
  • The survival game mode I mentioned last week is also in design and should be ready for implementation next week.

So look for all these soon!

Lastly, Viewmaster will be back next week. So we should have a new Wingman's Hangar and Studio Snapshot next week.

Cheers,

Week In Review (4.8.2016)

Hey Descenters,

This week we added a few things to the Proving Grounds build:

  • Fusion Cannon! Trust me, you do NOT want to get hit by this thing!
  • A bunch of performance tweaks to the Skylab map
  • An in game FPS option
  • Match browser fixes too

For complete details (including known issues) take a look at the patch notes.

What's coming next you ask?

How about:

  • Continuing to move toward completing the core gameplay.
  • Revised Panzer Blast Shield
  • Predator Spy tool
  • Goliath hauling
  • Mining
  • Warlock specials
  • Add mining to maps and create game modes that utilize it
  • Training Missions.
  • Co-op gameplay. This will come in with our new and greatly improved Bot AI
  • Survival game mode!

Stay tuned for more details...

Have a great weekend

Week In Review (4.1.2016)

Hey Descenters!

Another week in the books and a few things to tell you.

The tech guys spent most of the week getting VR ready for the Oculus and Vive launches. There is still more to do (like some UI changes) but we're getting close.

We've also started make some significant progress with single player and a co-op mode. More on both as the designs take more shape.

If you haven't played the latest release to production, there's lots of changes so give it a run. Here's the patch notes.

We have a Wingman's Hangar this week and I, for one, think it might be his best work!!!

That's it for me. Hope you have a great weekend.

Week In Review (3.25.2016)

Hey Descenters,

As many of you know, we spent most of last week either preparing for SXSW or manning the booth. It was great seeing some of you there! You can read all about it in Wingman's blog.

This week we've focused on getting back in the saddle. Our next map to be release (soon) is Skylab. It's super fun!

We've also spent some time getting ready for the Oculus store launch and continuing in the VR line getting the game up and running on Vive.

However, the next -- and soon to be released -- feature we're spending some time on is the Match Browser. I've mentioned this one before. You'll be able to see all matches running and select the match you wish to join. You'll, of course, still be able to create matches.

Our design team has been busy working out the Panzer special as well as selecting the best match rating system to use.

Hey Wingman's Hangar is back this week. Take a look!

And for the studio snapshot fans, I have this one for you today:

That's all from me for today. Check back next week for more.

Cheers,

Week In Review (3.11.2016)

Hey Descenters,

Another week gone by and lots of fun stuff happening with the game.
<<<<------- Is that a smart missile?

Before I get into that, the Descendent Studios team would like to congratulate our friends at Revival on their Kickstarter. It came down to the wire, as many do (including ours), but they made it! I can't wait to see more.

We spent this week:
  • Tweaking the destructibles in the Colosseum. We're VERY close to pushing this map to production.
  • Implementing the Smart Missile. It's just about ready for the Proving Grounds.
  • Continuing development of the Match browser. This will let you see what matches are currently running, how many players in match, and you'll be able to select the match to join.
  • Lots of progress with voice chat. Personally, I think this will really enhance team oriented matches.
  • And much more...

Ever heard of SXSW (South by Southwest)? If not, it's a HUGE music, film, and game show held in Austin every year. We'll have a booth in the Gaming Expo there next Thursday - Saturday (3/17 - 3/19). Guest Passes are FREE for the Gaming Expo, so come by and see us! You'll get a chance to play the game in VR, win some prizes, and meet the team!

How about some Wingman's Hangar -- now being shot from an undisclosed location. If we ever let him out, I'll let you know Posted Image

This week's virtual Studio Snapshot:

That's it for me. See you at SXSW!!.
