Campfire 5/5/2015 - Puzzle Contest Winners, Lore, and More!
Grab a seat- This week we're bringing you the full list of winners from our pre-Kickstarter puzzle contest, a bit of a campfire tale, and some other great community news.
=== PUZZLE CONTEST ===
Straight to brass tacks- A whole bunch of you participated in a multiday puzzle cracking contest during the countdown to the Kickstarter. Periodically, every couple of hours to start, down to minutes at the end- a little snippet of lore would post to the Descendent Studios front page, for instance:
I have seen little to report near the Sevilla arcology. There are rumors that Andalusia EOZ’s outlanders had been harvesting snow from the Sierra Morena until recently, when Parthenorbital sprayed the area with chemicals.
Embedded in those snippets was a secret message:
PRIORITY DISPATCH ORDERS
POST TERRAN MINING CORPORATION
TO MATERIAL DEFENDER
PREPARE FOR DESCENT
The key was identifying the first letter of a place name in the clip then putting the letters in the right code group in sequential order. Dozens of our pioneer members collaborated via chat and the forums to solve this devilish brainteaser.
Here is the full list of forum members (in time order) who submitted the correct answer before the deadline:
Kyro, Specter, Smilodon, elfindreams, Ser Erris, Bluie, MoonPro, Sunjammer, Xyphon, Bandersaur, Elijha, Milkman, Industrial, toby911gt1, Technatorium, Kraven, Kyrth, ripptide, StanClaus, Cookie, Mourf, AC_Black, Boba-Fett, Terence Kill, Jayharchitect, Keane, Redacted, Ambition, Tuk, starFriend123, Expression, Tinuva, Daisuke, Seraph, Topps, Tectonic, Flame, VicToMeyeZR, apex_predator, lujanhm99, Carde, Tikka, KarnEdge, kipkruide, johnsylar, deteriorattus, EliteGurke, Riddick, kenobi, Chex, Chaos, Kinshadow, Merric, tron, audsp98, Gemini, pace, Sputnick, CapnBludd, panda, Steel, Scorpio, Draegar, Hstaphath, Cowboy, Tigerlilly7, ardicane, Grue, Praetorian, Fray, Remote Viewer, Togg, Renegade-Shank, Dao Jones, dcndnts, trollmann, dibs, Gus Mooney, skyflash, Cantrip, jarredj, Wilhelm Sturmer, SlugBug, Demonstargazer, Logante, SonicSteel, Arcbinder, Mover Marcus, GreyWolf, xpaladin, Rixxis, Life, OmicronZero, Cojack, Groundhound, Choke, ZombieBoy, Wolf, BlueMonkey, gorynych, AE86true, New-mil, Dustflight, pirate, Kahuna888, Captain_Bosh, Starkiller, Smajdo, hornetghost, arseniy, LONER, Lanadien, Mechtechnal, HeartoftheMany, TheAllFather, Fyra, GeekByte, Alphastrike, Vulfgaar, Zer0gue, American knif3, Sigma957, VoidSpider, JazAero, Bugsie, Fallarnon, sodanakin, iMik, Kurros, SerLevArris, Disposable Hero, Schmidtrock, digital_obsidian, briguy, Bonepriest, Pagan Vanguard, Keita, Ronin, Bod

=== COMMUNITY UPDATES ===
Please keep an eye on your email over the next few weeks! We are finishing up the Kickstarter integration. That means that we are reaching out to people to link up your rewards with the forums. If you haven't already created a Descendent Studios forum account- now's the time! It also means that we will be starting Advisory Board meetings later this month. We will be also start connecting with our "Share the Wealth" and "Ultimate Creator" backers to begin the process of naming megacorporations... and ships!
Don't forget to tune into our Twitch Channel at 11am CDT (1600 UDT) tomorrow, May 6, for another fun-filled Wingman's Hangout, and be sure to submit your questions for FFFForum FFFFeedback!

Dynacyb Hopes "Robominers" Could Replace Human Pilots - PSN Money
By Martine Delahaye - April 10, 2312
TEL ISRAEL - Calling their systems "revolutionary" and "game-changing," Dynacyb CEO Elsa Alhadrami unveiled a new line of fully-autonomous nose sections for combat mining drones. Presenting at the annual Deftech Convention, the Riyadh-based centicorp claims that their new sensor packages can replace human drone operators in all but the most delicate missions. The new line, dubbed "Sheng", is expected to enter the market early next year.
Fitted with standard mounting hardware and weighing only half a kilogram more than comparable human-piloted packages, the new noses can be printed and fitted by harvester-borne nanofactories just like other models. Though the new noses are more expensive to license, total cost of ownership should be lower. "Operating a full team of drones requires only a single Sheng operator to set basic parameters," said Alhadrani. "This significantly reduces harvesters' personnel and life support requirements, saving your company a lot of money."
A flurry of controversy erupted around Dynacyb's booth early in the convention when CPIA board member Boyd Ulbrick paid a visit. Ulbrick, a vocal opponent of drones and advocate for human piloting, unleashed a torrent of criticisms about the new products.
"A man's worth is his work," he said, "if you take people out of the equation, you take away their meaning."
The venerable Ulbrick also complained about the impact of automated systems on the Underground Games, saying that audiences want to see excitement, not "robominers" as he called them. As he strode away, Ulbrick exclaimed, "you mark my words- these things will start mining US for minerals if we aren't careful!"
More muted concern came from a group of Parthenorbital engineers who expressed concern that the new product line would reduce interest in human spaceflight.
“Putting people in space is not ‘overhead’, it’s the whole point of space travel,” said Rachel Dravis, one of the gigacorporation’s computer systems engineers. “The Earth is used up. Humanity’s future is in space... our destiny is post-terran.”
Other executives expressed cautious optimism for the new line. Ilya Durante, a VP of Mining Operations for the young kilocorp Mwyn said that his firm would likely place a small order to evaluate the effectiveness of the systems.
"We're a growing firm," he said, "if these can save us even ten percent on overhead, that's well worth the investment."
Aaloka Maharani, a Drone Tech Director with Xorn, expressed similar hope for the technology.
The Deftech Convention continues through Sunday. More information about the Sheng noses is available on Dynacyb's AllMe.
That's all for this week, folks. Fly safe!
